Cream Soda Girlz x Converse - Bossy IWD2016

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

Tuesday 8th March marked International Women's Day 2016, so we went down to Converse's London HQ for the Bossy IWD2016 event. This was the second Cream Soda Girlz event we've been to, and trust me these ladies never fail! Cream Soda Girlz are a creative all girl collective who support and empower young females as well as throw creamy parties. Think retro pink, girl power and 90's hip-hop - these ladies really do know how to SLAY.

There were King Bloom cocktails, rainbow meringues by Meringue Girls whilst Glitter Box Beauty made sure all nails were on fleek. Skinny Vintage sold 90's inspired clothing which you could browse as Cream Soda's resident DJ Snoochie Shy dropped tune after tune on decks.

First up to talk about her career and experiences as a woman was fashion stylist Ayishat Akanbi, who styles the likes of Labrinth. She shared some tips on how to start styling and stand out amongst the crowd which included being resourceful, active and to use whats around you - whether that's model friends or upcoming photographers trying to develop a portfolio. This quote from Ayishat stood out the most for us:"Explore foreign film, documentaries... different things. If you base your style on what the latest celeb is wearing - everyone's going to look the same". She really made a point of highlighting individuality in fashion stating, "Style is a true expression of who you are". One word... Inspiring!

Creative and founder of swanzy.biz, Swanzy gave us some good advice sharing "Its important to make time for the things you care about". She revealed that prior to her career as a fashion designer and creative she would work long hours in a job, pitching other people's designs to buyers. She soon realised how much time and energy she was investing into other peoples work, so decided to quit and courageously embark on her own creative journey.

Tasha Anderson, Director at music PR agency House of 27 spoke of her experiences on how she got into PR. With clients on her books such as Lana Del Rey and De La Sol, she revealed that its important to meet people in the industry and network, even if its suggesting to go for a coffee with someone you're interested in working for or with. Her key tip was to start with yourself when it comes to pursuing your goals. She stated "What are you passionate about? If you like writing, start a blog and send your posts to people. Photographer? Take pictures of a gig and send your photos to the artist or manager."

The overarching campaign theme of International Women's Day this year, #PledgeForParity, was at the forefront of the evening, and all guests were encouraged to make a pledge to help accelerate gender equality on a global scale. You can donate here.

Overall this was a really inspiring event and a great opportunity to network and meet like-minded females. As women, we really need to come together to empower and support each other. We're all in for girl power!
